Hugh's laughing now?

Hugh Grant (c) Wenn

Hugh Grant often gives the impression that he’s not the most enthusiastic actor in the world. However, he’s taken that a step further by saying – not totally seriously, we hope – that seeing early versions of his films sometimes leaves him wanting to kill himself.

The actor said: “Normally, when I see the first cut I’m suicidal. I want to go to that euthanasia clinic in Switzerland, Dignitas, and have myself put down.” However, he’s slightly more optimistic about his new film, Did You Hear About the Morgans? “This film looks a lot better than the others did at this stage”, he gushed. (Well, that's what qualifies as gushing if you're Hugh.)

The new film is a comedy in which Grant stars with Sarah Jessica Parker as a successful but bickering New York couple who witness a murder and are subsequently targeted by the hitman. As a result, they’re forced to move from Manhattan to a small rural town under a witness relocation scheme.

Hugh has threatened several times to give up film work, and reportedly claimed he was entering semi-retirement after completing Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason in 2004. At the time, he said he was suffering from a form of stage fright that led him to have panic attacks and “freeze up” in front of the cameras.

However, he now seems more content with his lot, saying that making the new film has revived his enthusiasm for work. “I will not say I’m a reluctant actor any more because it makes me look ridiculous,” he admits. “I’ve got so much I haven’t done yet. I’ve been a master of the snooze button in my life.”
